How Much Probiotics Should One Take?

Before delving into the amount of probiotics that one will need to take, you may be wondering what exactly does probiotics mean or refer to? The answer to this question is not difficult, even if there seems to be some disagreement with respect to its acceptance.

A widely used definition that has been developed by WHO (World Health Organization) and the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) goes something like this: live microorganisms that when applied in right quantities will result in a health benefit to the host organism.

And these microorganisms are available in some of the foods we eat as well as in dietary supplements such as tablets, capsules, powders and in some other forms. Foods that contain probiotics include yogurt, miso, unfermented and fermented milk, soy beverages, tempeh and some juices.

In such food items, bacteria may have existed originally or may have been added when preparing them. Probiotics most often than not are bacteria and they are similar to the ones occurring naturally in the human’s gut, which usually come from two groups, namely; Bifidobacterium or Lactobacillus.

Now when considering the amount of probiotics to take, it is important for you to know that this area of medical science or drug administration is not yet regulated. Therefore, you should consult with experts in the area of natural health or someone that knows his onions at the local health food store for advice.

But probiotics also come in supplement form and for such supplements you need to be sure they have been properly stored (preferably in a refrigerator) and that their shelf life is adequate before consuming them.

Okay if you have been wondering how probiotics work, it is simply this way; that is they help in building the body’s immune system by introducing friendly bacteria into the human body’s gut. You see there are basically two types of microorganisms or should I say bacteria in the body.

One as you should be aware of by now, even if you never knew this is helpful, while the other is dangerous. And it is this friendly or good bacteria that helps the immune system to develop properly so as to protect the body against harmful microorganisms or bacteria that may cause disease.

Finally, research on this subject-matter is on-going and many more findings concerning the effects or counter-effects of probiotics is being discovered every now and then. Therefore, it is important for anyone who makes use of or plans to make use of probiotics extensively to keep abreast of current developments even as such findings come up sometime in the future. To do this, means that every concerned individual must be ready to carry out his/her own findings both online and off-line to discover what the true situation is.
